That is roughly 64 feet of roofline. The gable figure is an estimate — a tape measure is the only exact answer, and being 10 ft over is much cheaper than being 10 ft short.

How the maths works, if you would rather do it yourself

None of this is complicated, and knowing the method means you can sanity-check any quote you are given — including ours. Here is exactly what the planner above is doing.

Step one: how much roofline are you actually lighting?

Start with the width across the front of the house. Pace it out; one long stride is close enough to a yard for planning purposes. Then add for the peaks. A gable is two angled runs rather than one straight one, and those rakes cover noticeably more distance than the span underneath them — we budget about 0.6 times the front width per gable, which lands close on most North Atlanta homes.

A 45-foot front with two gables is therefore around 99 feet of run, not 45. Under-measuring here is the single most common DIY mistake, and it is the one that has people driving back to the shop on the second Saturday in December.

Step two: bulbs and clips

C9 and C7 bulbs are spaced 12 inches apart on a roofline, so the bulb count matches the footage: 140 feet is 140 bulbs. Mini lights sit around 6 inches apart, so the same run needs roughly 280.

Clips are one per bulb on a C9 or C7 run. That is not us being fussy — it is the reason a professional roofline reads as one straight line instead of sagging between fixings. Buy 10 percent over: you will drop a few, and a few will not survive being pulled off frozen shingle in January.

Step three: the electrical load nobody checks

A commercial LED C9 bulb draws about 0.96 watts, against roughly 7 watts for the incandescent bulb it replaced. That difference is the whole reason a modern display can run hundreds of feet off one outlet.

Multiply bulbs by watts, divide by 120 for amps, and keep any single circuit under 1,440 watts — that is the 80 percent continuous-load limit on a standard 15 amp circuit. A 300-bulb C9 display draws under 300 watts, so it is comfortably inside one circuit. A large display with wrapped trees and lit shrubs can pass it, and then the answer is to split across outlets on different breakers, not to hope.

Step four: cords, and the GFCI trips everyone blames on their lights

Use 16 AWG for a typical LED display, 14 AWG past 50 feet or above 5 amps, and 12 AWG past 100 feet. Everything outdoors needs to be outdoor-rated — look for a W in the jacket rating — and every outdoor circuit should be on a GFCI outlet.

When a display keeps tripping the GFCI, it is almost always water sitting in a plug-to-plug joint on wet ground. Lift the connections off the ground and cover them and the problem usually disappears. If it still trips after that, something is genuinely faulty — that is the safety device doing its job, not a nuisance to be worked around.

Square footage is the wrong unit — what matters is the length of the roofline you are lighting, not the floor area underneath it. A 2,000 square foot single-storey ranch might have a 60-foot front and one gable, so around 96 feet of run. The same square footage over two storeys has a narrower footprint and often less roofline, but every foot of it is twice as high off the ground.

One clip per bulb on a C9 or C7 roofline, so clips equal your bulb count: a 140-foot run at 12-inch spacing needs about 140 clips. That one-to-one ratio is what makes a professional line read straight instead of sagging between fixings. Add a hanging pole or a ladder standoff and year one is closer to $300 to $500. From year two you own the lights and are only replacing perhaps 15 percent a season.

Is this calculator accurate for my house?

It is an estimate built from the same rules of thumb we use before a site visit, and the gable figure in particular is an approximation — a tape measure is the only exact answer. Everything downstream of the roofline number is straight arithmetic and will be right for whatever footage you give it. Being 10 feet over is much cheaper than being 10 feet short.

What this does not tell you

The planner sizes a display. It cannot see your roof pitch, whether your gutters have leaf guards, or how you feel about a 22-foot ladder in the cold — and those are the things that decide whether this is a good afternoon or a bad one.
