Half a String of Christmas Lights Is Out: How to Fix It
One half or one section of the string is dark while the rest lights normally.
The short answer
A string of lights is wired in series sections, so one failed bulb kills its whole section while the other sections carry on. Find and replace that bulb and the section comes straight back. A light tester locates it in about a minute; by hand, work along the dark section pressing each bulb firmly into its socket, because a loose bulb causes exactly the same symptom as a dead one.
What is actually causing it

The fix: Seat it properly. Bulbs work loose in handling and storage constantly, and this costs nothing to check first.

The fix: Replace it with a spare of the same base. Strings have an internal shunt meant to keep the section alive when a bulb dies - when the shunt fails too, the whole section goes.

The fix: Fit a replacement. Running a string with an empty socket is also an exposed contact, so do not just leave it.

The fix: Corrosion means water got in, so check where that string is mounted. A single corroded socket can sometimes be cleaned; a string with several is finished.

The fix: On a cut-to-length C9 run, cut out the damaged span and refit plugs. On a moulded retail string, damaged wire is the end of it.
Finding the dead bulb

Confirm it is the string, not the run
Check whether the dark part is a section within one string or an entire string that has gone out. A whole string dark is usually a blown fuse in the plug instead, which is a different fix.

Press every bulb in the dark section
Work from the last lit bulb toward the far end, pushing each one firmly into its socket. Loose bulbs are the most common cause and cost nothing to rule out.

Look for the obvious failure
Scan for a bulb that is blackened, cloudy, cracked, or missing entirely. On incandescent strings a broken filament is often visible; on LEDs it usually is not.

Use a tester if nothing is obvious
A light tester finds a failed bulb or bad shunt in a section without you working through it bulb by bulb. This is the point at which a fifteen-dollar tool saves an hour.

Replace and check the socket
Fit a matching replacement bulb, and while it is out look inside the socket for corrosion. A socket that has been wet will fail again shortly.

Keep the spares with the lights
Tape the leftover bulbs to the reel that string is stored on. Next December you will not remember which base it takes.
This is the most common Christmas light fault there is, and it is also one of the most fixable. A section going dark while the rest of the string carries on is not a sign the string is finished. It is a sign that exactly one thing in that section has failed.
Why strings are wired this way
A light string is not one long circuit. It is several series sections chained together, typically two or three per hundred bulbs. Everything in a section shares one current path, so a single open circuit anywhere in it takes the whole section down while its neighbours keep working.
That design is why the fault looks so alarming — half your string vanishes — and why the repair is so small.
Manufacturers know one dead bulb should not cost you a section, so each bulb contains a shunt: a small wire that does nothing while the bulb works, then carries the current past it once it fails. What you are looking at when half a string goes dark is usually a bulb whose filament and shunt have both gone.
Start with the free check
Before you buy anything, press every bulb in the dark section firmly into its socket. Bulbs work loose during takedown, in storage and in handling, and a loose bulb produces precisely this symptom. We find this on service calls often enough that it is always the first thing we do.
If pressing them home does not bring the section back, then you are looking for a failed bulb — and that is where a tester stops being a gadget and starts being the thing that saves you an hour on a cold evening.
When to stop repairing
There is a point where a string is genuinely done: multiple corroded sockets, wire that has gone stiff and cracked, or a section that comes back and dies again within a day. That is a string telling you it has had its life, and it is almost always a cheap retail string in its second or third season.

Why does one bulb take out half the string?
Because light strings are wired in series sections rather than as one continuous circuit. A 100-bulb string is typically two or three series sections, and every bulb in a section is part of the same path - so when one fails open, that whole section goes dark while the others keep working. Modern strings include a shunt in each bulb designed to bridge the gap when the filament or LED dies; when the shunt fails as well, you get this symptom.
Can I fix half a string of LED Christmas lights?
Yes, the same way. LED strings use the same series-section wiring, and a failed LED or shunt kills its section identically. The difference is that a dead LED usually looks perfectly normal, so a tester is much more useful on LEDs than it is on incandescents where you can often just spot the broken filament.
Is it worth repairing or should I just buy a new string?
Repair a commercial-grade string every time - the bulbs are replaceable, the sockets are serviceable, and the string is worth many times the cost of a bulb. For a cheap retail string in its second season with corroded sockets, replacing it is the honest answer, and buying a better one is the answer after that.
What is a shunt in a Christmas light bulb?
A tiny wire inside the bulb base coated so it does not conduct while the bulb is working. When the bulb fails, the increased voltage across it burns off that coating and the shunt takes over, carrying current past the dead bulb so the rest of the section stays lit. It is why one dead bulb usually does not matter - and why it does when the shunt fails too.
My whole string is dark, not half. Is this the same problem?
Probably not. A completely dead string usually points at the fuse in the plug, the outlet, or the cord feeding it rather than a single bulb. Start with the fuse - it is the most commonly missed fix in the whole category.
