Why the number is bigger than you expected
Almost everyone under-buys for trees, and the reason is that a trunk does not look like 100 feet of anything. But a 12-inch trunk is over three feet around, and wrapping 8 feet up at 3-inch spacing means 32 complete turns. Thirty-two times three feet is around 101 feet — for one modest tree.
A mature oak with a 24-inch trunk doubles that to roughly 200 feet, and that is before you touch a single branch. Two front-yard trees can quietly need more light than the entire roofline of the house.
Spacing changes everything
Tightening from 4-inch to 2-inch spacing doubles the light required for exactly the same tree. Three inches is what we use as standard: dense enough that the trunk reads as a lit column from the street rather than a barber's pole, without doubling the cost.
Use 5mm wide-angle minis, not standard minis
Wide-angle 5mm bulbs throw light out sideways rather than straight along the string. On a wrapped trunk that is the difference between an evenly lit column and a bright stripe with two dark sides. It is the single most noticeable quality difference on a tree, and it costs very little more. Our mini light guide covers what to look for.
Or do not wrap at all
For a plain trunk, a stretch net goes on in about a minute and comes off in one piece in January, instead of unwinding thirty-odd turns in the cold with numb hands. From the street the finished look is near enough identical. We use hand-wrapping where the shape genuinely calls for it and nets everywhere else, and so should you.

How many lights do I need to wrap a tree?
Multiply the trunk's circumference in feet by the number of turns you will make up it. Turns equals the wrap height in inches divided by your spacing. A 12-inch trunk is about 3.14 feet around, and 8 feet at 3-inch spacing is 32 turns, so roughly 101 feet of lights. A mature 24-inch oak wrapped the same way takes about 200 feet.
How many lights to wrap a tree trunk 6 feet up?
At the standard 3-inch spacing, 6 feet is 24 turns. A small 6-inch ornamental trunk needs about 38 feet; a 12-inch trunk about 76 feet; a 24-inch trunk about 151 feet. Wrapping only 6 feet up rather than 8 saves roughly a quarter of the light, which is worth knowing if you are close to needing another box.
What spacing should I use when wrapping a tree?
Three inches between turns is the standard and what most installers use by default. Two inches is very dense and doubles the light needed for the same tree. Four inches is a lighter touch and uses noticeably less. Whatever you pick, keep it consistent the whole way up — uneven spacing shows far more at night than people expect.
Should I wrap the branches as well as the trunk?
Wrapping the main limbs adds roughly 60 percent again on a mature hardwood, because although the limbs are thinner there are several of them. It looks excellent and it is a great deal more work. On a big tree it is also not ladder work — leaning a ladder on a round trunk is much less stable than on a wall.

How much does it cost to run wrapped tree lights all season?
Very little. 5mm LED minis draw about 0.07 watts a bulb, so even a heavily wrapped tree of 200 bulbs is around 14 watts. Run six hours a night for 45 nights at typical Georgia rates, that is well under a dollar for the whole season per tree.
A word on branches and ladders
Wrapping the canopy of a mature hardwood is not a ladder job. Leaning a ladder against a round, possibly wet trunk is far less stable than leaning it on a wall, and the higher you go the less there is to rest it on.
